What to Expect During and After a Chemical Peel

Woman relaxing while getting a chemical peel in East Bay, CAChemical peels may be intimidating, but they are highly effective for improving the skin’s appearance and texture. Whether you’re targeting acne scars, fine lines, or uneven pigmentation, chemical peels can be a game-changer. However, there is a process before you can experience the benefits fully. Here’s what you can expect during and after a chemical peel.

Lūx MD offers professional chemical peels for various skin types and concerns, helping achieve a smoother, more radiant complexion.

During the Chemical Peel

The process typically begins with a deep cleansing of your skin. We may use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, or makeup, ensuring the peel can penetrate effectively. Depending on your skin type and goals, we will apply a chemical solution, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

You may feel tingling or mild burning as the solution works its way into your skin. The intensity varies based on the depth of the peel: light, medium, or deep. Light peels are often the most comfortable, while deeper peels may feel more intense. The application typically takes 10-20 minutes, with a neutralizing agent to end the process.

Immediately After the Peel

Once the peel is complete, your skin may feel warm and look slightly red, similar to a mild sunburn. For deeper peels, swelling may also occur. We can apply a soothing ointment to calm the skin and reduce discomfort. Follow instructions carefully to prevent irritation.

Recovery and Peeling

Peeling typically occurs within two to three days after the treatment and can last up to a week, depending on the depth of the peel. You may notice dryness, flaking, or even slight crusting during this time. Avoid picking or peeling the skin manually, as this can cause scarring.

Moisturizing frequently and using a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser are crucial. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun, so apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, even if staying indoors.
